The Palena Netball Club was founded in 1965 and has steadily increased in size and professionalism. It was formed as the result of several players from the Hobart Teachers College team, forming a new club.
Our club logo features a netball with seven radiating stars. Our original colours were yellow and brown.
“Palena” is an aboriginal word
meaning “seven stars” or “shining stars”.
The club set the trend in administration by being the first Southern Netball Club to become incorporated. Palena was also the first club in the south to gain sponsorship for our players.
In 1996 our sponsors ‘DJ Mitsubishi’ encouraged us to accept a new package that included a change of colours, uniform and the addition of DJ to our club name. Our new colours are black, royal blue, red and white.
In 1999 sponsorship was accepted from BP Fuel and for a short period of time the club was know as BP Palena Netball Club Incorporated.
DJ Motors again came on board as the clubs major sponsor in 2002 and this relationship continues today.
Palena Netball Club has had many state representatives and at least two reserve Australian representatives, Janine Blake and Maureen Wilding. One of our current coaches, Shane Fish has represented Australia in the Australian Men’s Netball Association.
